Family Law in Canberra – Major reforms to family law proposed

The Commonwealth Attorney-General has just released the December 2013 Family Law Council’s report on parentage and the Family Law Act. The Council controversially recommends “that when a Family Court judge makes parenting orders, the word “parent’’ be substituted with a term such as “parent and other significant adults’’. And in the wake of the Baby Gammy scandal, “the government’s advisory council calls for Commonwealth legislation to clarify that sperm donors, egg donors or surrogate mothers are not legal “parents’’.
